Brief Profile of Dr Abhijit Singh,
An accomplished maritime professional and passionate educationist with multifaceted work experience in shipping, on-shore and as well ‘at sea’. A result-oriented decisive leader, a change agent, with proven success in conceptualizing ideas and strategic planning. Presently, he is holding the post of Executive Director, Indian Ports Association (IPA), an apex body formed by the Major Ports of India under administrative control of Government of India (GoI) and think-tank to Ministry of Ports, Shipping & Waterways, and rightly hailed as center of excellence for maritime related matters. He attained the distinction of becoming the youngest senior officer, equivalent to Deputy Chairman of Major Port at the age of 34 years. In the past, he sailed onboard ships and worked onshore in senior capacity with a UK based oil major shipping company. He has an eclectic mix of management, engineering and law as part of his professional maritime journey and his research interests consist of technology and process management enabled – Safety and environment sustainability.
He is closely involved in the policy decision-making process to bring sectoral reforms by making ports as drivers of economic change, saving logistic cost & time, easing port congestion, enhancing employability, capacity building and digitizing & modernizing of ports. He is regarded as an ambassador for Indian maritime sector, representing the IPA, MoPSW and Major Ports of India at various national and international forums like ASSOCHAM, FICCI, IMO, BIMSTEC, SASEC etc.
As they say 'living with a purpose changes everything', Dr Abhijit Singh believes in a philosophy of changing the world by two things, one by determination and other through his students. He has always strived for excellence, and this comes from setting high standards, vigorously pursuing them and nurturing enthusiasm for the challenge and learning. Proved that through the right approach, it can be accomplished much more than what traditional years of routine work experience normally offers. He is a dedicated and committed person who believes in continuously evolving, with his problem-solving approach, he never fails in undertaking any complex issues. He expressed his vision, to build an ideal Maritime Sector in the county with international standards, through his laborious and excellent involvement in tasks entrusted by the Ministry.
He has a strong passion for becoming an educationist. He has lectured at various premier Indian Business Schools and universities. As an educationist, he likes the idea of knowing one day that he has made a real difference in touching hundreds or thousands of lives and made a difference to them, and thus they can make positive changes in the world.
As they say, “True leaders don't make followers, they create more leaders”. His dream is to provide avenues to the next generation and to set about changes that will dramatically transform the world. Having sailed on and piloted in challenging voyages, he is equipped in a multi-cultural environment and demonstrates a flair for grooming professionals, in line with this, he intends to set up a World-class institution in future to come, which will transform a larger world forum. He is regarded as a ‘Youth Icon’ and followed by approx. 1 million direct-indirect followers from maritime fraternity’ in various social media platforms.
He has authored the widely acclaimed book ‘World-Class Ship Manager - In 4 Weeks’. He is a recipient of many national and international awards and He is hailed as a young path-breaker, change-maker and visionary of tomorrow for the maritime sector. Recently, awarded with the prestigious National award ‘Digital India Award’ by Hon’ble President of India.
He is a graduate in Marine Engineering from BITS Pilani, MBA in Maritime Management London and Post Graduate in Marine Law from London and Doctorate in Port & Shipping Management. He is also Fellow of Institute of Chartered ShipBrokers London, Fellow of Institute of Marine Engineer, Associate Fellow of Nautical Institute London and member of Indian Council of Arbitration.
He has maintained high integrity and ethics, focusing just on bringing a good change in the sector and impacting the life of the maritime community as a whole. There are no complaints, in fact, no legal, police records and vigilance case against him. Focus, Clarity of Thoughts and Speed - are the three best expressions which describe him. He believes, “there is only one life to live and which has to be purpose-driven as there are so many good things to do - this every moment count.”
