Dr Alston Choong Wai Kwong has bagged Asia's Outstanding Achiever Award

Dr. Alston Choong Wai Kwong is a Consultant Sports, Exercise and Musculoskeletal Medicine Physician and Academician from the Sports Medicine Unit, Faculty of Medicine, University of Malaya, Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. He is specialised in treating sports-related and musculoskeletal injuries, sports rehabilitation, ultrasound-guided interventional pain therapy, injection of orthobiologics such as prolotherapy, platelet-rich plasma, and mesenchymal stem cells (also known as regenerative sports or musculoskeletal medicine). Graduated with a Doctor of Medicine (MD) from the National University of Malaysia, he continued to pursue his postgraduate Master of Medicine in Sports Medicine (M.Med Sports Med). He later obtained recognition from the International Olympic Committee (IOC) after completing his Postgraduate Diploma in Sports Medicine (PGDip Sports Med). He is also a qualified Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine (DO), Doctor of Physical Therapy (DPT) and a certified acupuncturist. He often integrates Osteopathic Manipulative Therapy and acupuncture as part of the complementary therapy in treating musculoskeletal disorders.

He had vast experience in medical coverage of various sporting events, including multisport games at national and international levels, and was appointed as a team physician for multiple sports before. In addition, his active role as an educator is eminent through the teaching and supervising undergraduate and postgraduate students. His reputable works have gained national and international recognition,  and he often being invited as a distinguished speaker to share his knowledge and research in numerous symposiums, conferences and congresses at the national and international levels.

Besides being a conscientious clinician, Dr. Alston is also an active researcher conducting various research in the field of sport-related or musculoskeletal injuries, mainly involved in US-guided interventional pain therapy, regenerative sports and musculoskeletal therapy such as the use of orthobiologics like platelet-rich plasma, mesenchymal stem cells, and sports rehabilitation. As for exercise medicine, he conducted various research on physical activity and physical well-being for adults, children, adolescents and special populations such as patients with chronic non-communicable diseases, cancer survivors and many more. Furthermore, he also conducts social science research to explore and promote sports diversity, equality and inclusion for all people.

Currently, Dr. Alston serves as the Vice President of the Malaysian Association of Sports Medicine (MASM). He is appointed as one of the panelists in result management committee in the Anti-doping Agency of Malaysia (ADAMAS). He is also an active member of the International Federation of Sports Medicine (FIMS), American College of Sports Medicine (ACSM), Asian Federation of Sports Medicine (AFSM), World Institute of Pain (WIP), Tissue Engineering and Regenerative Medicine International Society (TERMIS), and International Association of Stem Cell and Regenerative Medicine (IASRM).

Besides working as a dedicated clinician, lecturer and researcher, he is also a high-intensity interval training (HIIT) instructor, international certified dragon boat race coach, technical official and competitive athlete. His passion for sports also includes weight lifting, CrossFit® training, swimming, hiking and football. He will continue his passion in serving the nations and people through his expertise and continue his innovation in the fraternity of Integrated Sports, Exercise, Musculoskeletal and Osteopathic Medicine, and continuously promote the importance of sports diversity, equality and inclusion for all in building a healthier and better society through sport.
