Dr Fathimath Mufliha has bagged Asia's Emerging Women Leader Award

Dr. Fathimath Mufliha is a Consultant in Radiology at Maldives’ largest tertiary hospital, Indira Gandhi Memorial Hospital (IGMH). Concurrently she holds the post of Assistant to Medical Director at IGMH. She is also the medical representative of the Parole Board - Maldives Correctional Services appointed by the President of the Maldives. In addition, Dr. Mufliha is the Health Promotion Coordinator of Maldivian Medical Association and founder member of Radiology Society of the Maldives, holding the position of General Secretary of the society.

In 1997, Dr. Mufliha joined the health sector as a secretary at Ministry of Health (Minister’s Bureau) and later as a Medical Officer after completing MBBS from Crimea State Medical University, Ukraine post internship in Chittagong Medical University / Bangladesh in 2007. She worked as a Medical officer and Senior Medical officer in IGMH and Thalassemia Center/ MBS for 6 years. After her Residency program from National Academy of Medical Science (NAMS), Nepal, she rejoined IGMH as a Consultant in Radiology in the year 2017.

Over the span of a 13-year-old career in the health sector of the Maldives, her highlight is the significant role she played as an Assistant to Medical Director, especially during the Covid-19 management efforts for the greater Male’ area. She successfully manages the human resources within the medical department. She is also a member of the Human Resource Management Team formed for Covid-19.

As a Consultant in Radiology, she is specialized in diagnostic modalities as ultrasound, CT scan, MRI, X-ray, fluoroscopy, and mammography inclusive of minor interventions like FNAC, biopsy and aspirational interventions. She manages the post of Chairman/ Radiation protection Officer of the Radiation protection committee formed in 2019 to ensure the radiation safety for both radiation workers and the patients.

During Covid-19, as part of the Executive Committee of Maldivian Medical Association, she played a major role in initiating the Mobile Medical Response Team (MMRT) to attend to the medical needs of the homebound citizens during the full lockdown in the Maldives. In March 2021, she successfully led a joint mass media movement to create awareness among the public and show the unity of health care professionals in the fight against Covid 19 - in collaboration with Maldives Nurses Association, Professional Association of Laboratory Services, Health Protection Agency (HPA) and UNICEF. The movement involved more than 1000 health care professionals across the Maldives, inclusive of Health Centers, Atoll hospitals and regional hospitals.

She went above and beyond to create awareness and to help stop the spread by being an active frontliner, media content creator, and amateur artist. She is also the runner-up in the Joint Media video competition on the importance of preventive measures in Covid-19.

As part of Maldives Medical Association’s initiative, she organizes and hosts public health awareness sessions on various health issues via the Clubhouse application. Up to date, 17 such awareness programs have been aired by her; the sessions will be accessible to the public on Maldivian Medical Association’s website. Among other major health programs, she plays an active role in the Anti-Tobacco campaign and initiated talk regarding Folic acid fortification with the concerned authorities.

Apart from all these, Dr. Mufliha is a mother of two who balances both professional and personal life outstandingly with support from her family. 

Dr. Mufliha faces difficulties head on, and she does it equipped with a strategic mind, compassion, humor and a "we can do this" mentality. She inspires others to become champions for noble causes. Dr. Mufliha is humbled and honored to have received the “Asia’s Emerging Women Leadership Award “ from ASIA Awards powered by RULA Awards.
