Biography of Dr. Gehan De Soysa

Dr. Gehan De Soysa is a dynamic entrepreneur, visionary leader, and sustainability advocate who has redefined Sri Lanka’s FMCG and apparel landscape through innovation, brand building, and international expansion. With over two decades of leadership across diverse industries, he has consistently delivered extraordinary business growth while driving initiatives that balance profitability with environmental and social responsibility.

As Chairman of Threadworks Pvt Ltd, Dr. De Soysa transformed a family-run business into a global powerhouse, expanding revenues from Rs. 85 million to Rs. 6.2 billion. He also established Velona Cuddles (Pvt) Ltd, which has grown into Sri Lanka’s No. 1 diaper and baby care brand. Today, Velona Cuddles products are available in over 25 countries, with award-winning innovations such as biodegradable bamboo diapers and eco-friendly hygiene solutions, positioning the company as a regional leader in sustainable FMCG. Dr. De Soysa’s strategic foresight extends internationally. He is Director of Shipable Pty Ltd in Australia, where he spearheaded the introduction of sustainable Sri Lankan baby care products into the Australian market, and Director of bConnect Lanka, a joint venture facilitating trade between Sri Lanka and Australia. His consultancy work has also supported groundbreaking projects, including large-scale apparel manufacturing in Ghana and Sri Lanka’s first waste-to-energy project.

Academically accomplished, Dr. De Soysa holds a PhD in Organisational Behaviour, an MBA, and a Master of Sustainability from the University of Cambridge. He is a sought-after speaker on sustainability, corporate strategy, and innovation, blending academic insight with hands-on business success.

A decorated leader, Dr. De Soysa has received numerous international recognitions, including the ACEF Asian Business Leadership Award, RULA Asia Awards for Innovation and Sustainability, and multiple SLIM Brand Excellence Awards. His leadership has also been instrumental in securing gold awards across global platforms for Velona Cuddles in customer service, eco-product innovation, and digital transformation.

Beyond business, Dr. De Soysa is deeply committed to social and community development. He founded the Parentthrive Community, an initiative that supports child development, family well-being, and community empowerment. He also established the Silver Sustain CSR programme to address the needs of Sri Lanka’s ageing population. Alongside these efforts, he plays an active role in sports and civic organizations, serving as Vice President of the Sri Lanka Basketball Association and holding leadership positions in various business and professional bodies.
