Founder & Chairman –
Flyinng Squad Ambulance Services
Recipient of the Lifetime Achievement Award
Asia Awards powered by RULA Awards
Dr. P. R. M. M. Shanthakumar is a
distinguished healthcare pioneer, humanitarian, and social innovator whose
life’s work spans over four decades of dedicated service to humanity.
He is the Founder and Chairman of Flyinng Squad Ambulance Services,
one of India’s most trusted and pioneering private emergency medical service
institutions, established in 1981 in Chennai, Tamil Nadu.
Guided by a strong sense of
compassion and public responsibility, Dr. Shanthakumar envisioned a system
where timely, safe, and dignified emergency medical care would
be accessible to every individual, irrespective of social or economic
background. At a time when organized ambulance services were virtually absent
in India, he laid the foundation for an institution that would go on to redefine
emergency medical transportation standards nationwide.
Under his visionary leadership,
Flyinng Squad Ambulance Services has evolved into a comprehensive emergency
response organization with advanced life-saving ambulances, trained
medical and paramedical teams, and long-distance critical care capabilities.
The organization has been instrumental in saving millions of lives,
safely transferring thousands of infants, and covering over
15 million kilometers across India, earning widespread public trust
and professional respect.
Dr. Shanthakumar is widely
recognized as an industry trailblazer, introducing numerous
first-of-their-kind innovations in India’s private ambulance sector. His
contributions include movable patient stretchers for seamless bed-to-bed
transfers, onboard oxygen and suction systems, trained paramedical assistance,
air-conditioned emergency ambulances, mobile ICU units, neonatal care
ambulances with incubators, AED-enabled services, germ-free ambulances, and
air-suspension–fitted vehicles to ensure patient comfort. His launch of the
internationally benchmarked ICU PLUS ambulance further
elevated standards in long-distance critical care transport.
A defining dimension of Dr.
Shanthakumar’s public service contribution is his collaboration with
the Greater Chennai Corporation (GCC). Under a Public–Private
Partnership (PPP) model, he established a Mortuary along with
a Funeral Hall for public use, significantly strengthening Chennai’s
civic and public health infrastructure.
This facility provides hygienic,
dignified, and well-managed mortuary and last-rites services to
citizens, ensuring respectful handling of the deceased and comfort to grieving
families, particularly during times of crisis and high demand. The initiative
stands as a model example of how private expertise can effectively
complement public systems in delivering essential services with
accountability and compassion.
Beyond emergency medical services,
Dr. Shanthakumar’s humanitarian vision extended to dignified funeral
care. His invention of the Dead Body Mobile Freezer Box
in 1996—patented and later released for free public use without royalty—has
become an indispensable service across India, preserving dignity in death while
simultaneously creating employment and entrepreneurial opportunities.
Flyinng Squad Ambulance Services
has been entrusted with serving people from all walks of life,
including national leaders, public figures, artists, jurists, and the common
public alike. Media narratives consistently highlight Dr. Shanthakumar’s rare
ability to blend innovation with empathy, making his work
impactful far beyond commercial success.
In recognition of his extraordinary
lifetime contribution to healthcare, emergency medical services, public–private
collaboration, and humanitarian innovation, Dr. P. R. M. M.
Shanthakumar has been conferred the Lifetime Achievement Award
by the Asia Awards powered by RULA Awards.
Reflecting on receiving this
prestigious honour, Dr. Shanthakumar expresses that this recognition represents
every life saved, every family supported during moments of crisis, and
every team member who upheld the mission over the decades. He regards
the award as deeply humbling and as a renewed responsibility to continue serving
society with integrity, compassion, and an unwavering commitment to
humanity.
