Glance of Dr Rajcoomar Jhurry's Success:

Born on 28^th March 1959 in Port Louis, among 3 brothers, he was the elder one. As the elder son in the family he has soon realised that he is deemed to give guidance and show the way to his brothers. He completed his secondary level education at College La Confiance, Beau Bassin (1971 – 1977). After that the path towards higher education started for him as he has already made his mind to contribute for better education in Mauritius.

A visionary man was born with lots of challenging ideas, innovation and determination to bring Education at every door- steps for all level of people in Mauritius. The journey of success started with the set up of JR School in 1980/1981.

Profile

Hereunder is a brief history of key dates in the existence of JR School since its inception in a small garage of his house in 1981 by Dr Rajcoomar Jhurry, now well known pioneer and leader in spearheading innovation and development in the training & education sector. With its 2000 students and more thousands of employees trained in different companies and a panoplea of 250 Award and Non-Award courses, JR School has positioned itself as one of the most strategic educational partner in Mauritius and at International level.

HISTORICAL BACKGROUND

• 1981 - JR School was founded by Dr. Rajcoomar Jhurry and started its activities in a small garage, giving courses only in design and building drawing.
• Late 1980s' - provided training for corporate bodies such as General Construction Co Ltd with the introduction of the General Course in Construction. Dr. Rajcoomar Jhurry was the only employee doing all the tasks and processes for training Since then, JR School has expanded its portfolio of courses from Construction and Built Environment to Management, Tourism and Hospitality, IT, Beauty Care, Sports and Education.
• 1990s - Very quickly, through the vision of Rajcoomar Jhurry JR School which was originally spaced in a garage was becoming too small for the growing numbers of students joining this institution over the years; a building was thus constructed and courses were classified under the different academies - See Section Academies.
• 1998 - In its quest to adopt international best management practices, JR School through Rajcoomar Jhurry became the first educational institution in Mauritius to be certified ISO 9001:2000 by SGS. Now it has upgraded to the ISO 9001: 2008 Version.
• 2000 - JR School has been consistently thriving in the provision of quality education and training and has become a reference in high standard training geared towards World Class Education and Training. With the rapid evolution in the world of training & development, Dr. Rajcoomar Jhurry, in a spirit of innovation and creativity, introduced new courses such as Information Technology, Management, Agriculture, Design and Decoration, etc.
  A portion of land was purchased on the opposite of the JR School and converted into classes to sustain the development of all the Academies and also houses an Amphitheatre for multi-purpose session.
• 2005 - JR School has always believed in supplementing its academic curricular with sports, leisure & entertainment activities.
  It invested a lot in supporting sports initiatives such as football and volleyball. It students thrive participating in national competitions and has won lots of trophies. Last year they have won the Inter University Football Championship.
• 2009 - JR School goes World Class and embarked on its construction project of Athena International Centre For Excellence (AICE), a modern architectural structure for world class Tertiary Education with residential Campus and an International Multi Function Conference Centre for the organization of events and conferences, which is soon to open. It has necessitated direct financial investments of Rs 150 Million

• December 2009 - JR School has not only invest in education but also in personal 2009 development of each and every trainees by organising -Miss JR School , Mr. JR School and Face of the Year are activities which have successfully been introduced last to encourage students value and enhance their personality, growth and development. Members of Jury were composed of professionals from different sectors of the economy. On its journey towards continual improvement, JR School fully sponsored eight (8) of its management staff to the tune of Rs 600,000 to learn best practices at the Institute of Technical Education Singapore (ITES) from 14 to 17 December 2009. Objectives of this study tour were to:
  • be exposed to major processes in managing an International Educational campus
  • take cognizance of ITES Pedagogic Model and Teachers' Training
  • learn about Curriculum Design & Development
  • learn about extracurricular and social activities for the enhancement of students

• December 2009 -In order to make one entity of its personnel and JR School, Dr. Rajcoomar Jhurry, made a strategic decision: that of allocating shares of the company to all staff, from top management to administrative support levels.

• 2010 - Focus on the construction and opening of Athena International Centre For Excellence (AICE) which apart from being a Tertiary Education Campus, will also house under its roof:

  • Athena Global Quality Network (an NGO aimed at promoting quality and excellence at national, regional and international levels)
  • the Rya International Conference Centre with a seating capacity of 225 persons and a Centre for Professional Development

• 2010 - For further continual improvement, JR School once more fully sponsored 8 of its management staff to the tune of Rs 750,000 to learn best practices at the Institute of Technical Education Singapore (ITES) from 14 to 29 December 2010. Objectives of this study tour were to: 

1. be exposed to major processes in managing an International Educational campus
2. take cognizance of ITES Pedagogic Model and Teachers' Training
3. learn about Curriculum Design & Development
4. learn about extracurricular and social activities for the enhancement of students

• 2011 - JR School invest more on its new generation and youth by organizing football competition
• 2011 - New international collaboration was established in order to maintain the international quality training and to provide more effective man power on the market - See list of partners
• 2011 - New medical school opens at AICE with collaboration of Anna Medical College - India
• 2011 - Won the second place for Best JR School Young Entrepreneurs Café organized by Teach a Man to Fish- UK
• 2011 - Won the first place for the most visited Blog on Facebook for the JR School Young Entrepreneurs Café organized by Teach a Man to Fish - UK
• 2012 - Won the Global Winner first price for best photo for JR School Young Entrepreneurs Café organized by Teach a Man to Fish - UK
• 2012 - Won the Best Business Plan for JR School Young Entrepreneurs Café organized by Teach a Man to Fish - UK
• 2012 - Affiliated with international partners like Open University of Malaysia, University of Bolton - UK and UCSI University - Malaysia to launch international programmes like BSc Human Resource Management, BSc (Hons) Quantity Surveying and Commercial Management, BSc (Hons) Construction Management and BSc Architectural Technology (Part I Architecture)
• 2012 - Accreditation of programme BSc Human Resource Management by Tertiary Education Commission - TEC Mauritius awarded by Open University of Malaysia
• 2013 - Official visit of delegation from University of Naresuan and University of Phayao of Thailand for the programmes like BSc in Occupational Health and Safety Management, BSc Architecture and Master in Business Administration
• 2013 - Accreditation of programmes by Tertiary Education Commission - TEC Mauritius awarded respectively by University of Bolton - UK and UCSI University - Malaysia
