(For ASIA Awards powered by World Research
Congress – Individual Category)
“The highest education is that which does
not merely give us information but makes our life in harmony with all
existence.” — Rabindranath Tagore
Mr. Gaurab Sen, Chief Executive
Officer of the Sasakawa-India Leprosy Foundation (S-ILF), is a
distinguished development professional whose work reflects two decades of
commitment to human rights, inclusion, and dignity for marginalized
communities. With a background in International Human Rights Law and Linguistics,
he combines analytical depth with field-based insight to create impactful
social change.
Mr. Sen’s leadership journey embodies the
essence of purposeful service. Beginning his career in journalism and advocacy,
he evolved into a development leader known for integrity, compassion, and
strategic thinking. His early experience with organizations such as the National
Centre for Advocacy Studies, Disha (Deshabandhu Club), and the German
Leprosy and TB Relief Association (GLRA India) helped him develop a deep
understanding of disability, leprosy, gender, and child rights issues in India.
His later work with The Hummingbird Foundation, supported by British
partners, allowed him to strengthen community-based action to prevent human
trafficking and enhance child protection networks in West Bengal.
His association with international agencies
such as the United Nations Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights
(UNOHCHR) in Bangkok further shaped his global perspective. There, he
contributed to research and reports on the political participation and human
rights of persons with disabilities in Southeast Asia — a foundation that
continues to inform his inclusive approach to leadership today.
Since joining S-ILF, Mr. Sen has
demonstrated exceptional leadership, first as Head – Programs and now as
Chief Executive Officer. His vision has strengthened S-ILF’s mission to
promote dignity and socio-economic empowerment among people affected by
leprosy. Through strategic planning, programme management, and field
coordination, he has ensured measurable outcomes in livelihood promotion, skill
development, education, and awareness.
Under his guidance, S-ILF now reaches 21
states, impacting more than 3,550 families through livelihood
initiatives, training over 850 youth in employable skills, and
supporting 230 higher education scholars, 205 nursing students,
and 500 children through after-school programmes. His Decentralisation
Model, implemented across seven regions, has redefined how S-ILF operates —
making the organisation more responsive, participatory, and accountable at
every level.
Mr. Sen’s leadership philosophy is rooted
in empathy and quiet strength. Colleagues describe him as composed, thoughtful,
and deeply ethical — a leader who prefers impact over attention. Guided by the
principle,
“Sev?parmodharma?” — Service is the highest
virtue,
he believes that progress in the development sector must always be measured by
the human lives it uplifts.
