Kabiraj Upreti has bagged Asia's Innovator of the Year Award

My name is Kabiraj Upreti and I was born on 3rd June 1987 as the youngest son out of four children. My parents used to spend their whole time farming with limited cultivable land. Neither of my parents could have formal education.

I was born in a rural village of  Sindhuli district, Nepal. I took my school education in the village where I had to walk nearly 2 hours a day to and after school and migrated to the Terai region for higher education. I studied Masters in Education from Tribhuvan University and also accomplished Masters in Public Administration. It is interesting to share that I worked as a secondary school teacher when I was pursuing my diploma and university degrees. I was also able to secure higher scores to the students and was awarded a certificate of honors and appreciation by SR PABSON.

Immediately after the completion of my academic degree I joined government service in 2012 as school supervisor (equivalent to section officer). I had to supervise almost 200 secondary/primary schools in my inspection area. I served as supervisor for over five years in different parts of the country in various responsibilities from implementation to policy making level. It is my honor and privilege that I was awarded by Education Honor on international education Day 2014.

Serving as education officer, I competed in the undersecretary level examination of the government post in free competition and could succeed in the very post. I have been serving as the chief administrative officer in different local governments of the country since 2018. Currently I am working in Banepa Municipality which is located at about 20 km east from Kathmandu valley. As an administrative chief of a local government I have the responsibility to manage the different works ranging from planning to implicating development works and leading the administration. It is a required skill of a chief administrative officer to balance public demand and political spirit. In Making the policy of a local government I am given the crucial role not only because it has to be feasible and practical but also needs to be based within a limited source in an underdeveloped country like Nepal. Result oriented administration management requires a wise leadership with creative mind and innovative workouts.

While serving in the Nepal government, I got an opportunity to attend a youth exchange program in Tokyo, Japan in 2015 from Nepal where SAARC countries' delegates participated. Likewise in 2018, I had another opportunity of capacity development about governance in the University of Chinese Academy, Beijing. The program was about policy discussion for 15 days.

As an Chief Administrative Officer of Banepa Municipality I was awarded with Banepa Sewa Padak (Banepa Service Medal) for acting as best administrator on the occasion of her 40th  established year by the then deputy prime minister.

As it was the time of the coronavirus pandemic, I came to know about Asia's no.1 Brand and Leadership Excellence Awards and applied for it. When I got the letter of confirmation of bagging the Asia's Innovator of the year Award by Asia Awards powered by RULA Awards, I was speechless for the moment being emotional and my happiness had no bound. I shared it with the Mayor of Banepa municipality at first then to my better half within very few minutes. This has made me motivated and responsible person as a world citizen.
