Mariyam Huda has bagged Asia's Outstanding Director Award in Nursing


Ms Huda developed a passion for the healthcare industry as a child when she was required to act as a translator during hospital visits while residing with her grandparents abroad at the age of 12. 

A member of prestigious Organization, Sigma Teta Thau International (STTI), world's second largest nursing honor society, Ms Huda was born in Maldives and raised in Trivandrum, India.  She is a community facilitator of the society’s online members community and professional networking site. She has also earned The Circles badge for Mentor/Coach, Community Ambassador and Sigma Volunteer. She has completed her schooling in Trivandrum, India. However, in 1999, the family moved back to Maldives, where Ms Huda completed her GCE O level exam. 

Soon after the completion of her secondary education, Ms Huda pursued her dream of becoming a healthcare professional and joined the Diploma in Nursing program at School of Health Sciences, Male’, Maldives. 

After graduating with a Diploma in Nursing, Ms Huda joined Indira Gandhi Memorial Hospital on 1st August 2004. Ms Huda pursued her Bachelors Degree in Nursing at Aga Khan University, Karachi, Pakistan and graduated in the year 2008. She continued her work at IGMH as a compassionate and an empathetic nurse at bedside until her resignation from IGMH on 6th January 2012. 

As her career began as the Director for Sexual and Reproductive Health and Rights at Society for Health Education (SHE), Ms Huda was passionate to promote the health and well being of women in Maldives. She has facilitated multiple health awareness campaigns, sessions and has been part of numerous training programs. As part of her work at SHE, she began to promote health education sessions for drug addicts who were in their rehabilitative process with a major focus on the systematic effect of substance abuse. At SHE, Ms Huda remained as the focal point of International Planned Parenthood Federation (IPPF) for unsafe abortion. During her period at SHE, Ms Huda worked passionately with the objective of enhancing the relevance of reproductive health and rights and actively participated in the advocacy of reproductive health and rights. 

In August 2014, Ms Huda began her career as a Senior Medical Authorization Officer at Nation's Social Insurance, Aasandha. In consideration with her line of work at Aasandha Company Limited, it was essential that her decision was prompt and decisive. Ms Huda empathized with the patients request while ensuring that she complied with the regulations of the scheme. She has a perfect balance of swiftness, compliance and empathy in her decisions. During her four years at Aasandha Company Limited, Ms Huda was commended for her consistent valiance in performing her job and for her work on ensuring public's confidence in the scheme. 

Ms Huda’s passion for teaching and her vision to progress nursing education in Maldives led her to join the largest private higher education institution of Maldives, Villa College in March 2018. She has remained as the program coordinator for Diploma in Nursing and has taught various modules for both undergraduate and postgraduate programs. Her students look forward to her sessions as she identifies ways of student engagement with various methods even in the most unfavorable situations as during Covid 19 pandemic. She utilizes innovative strategies in student engagement and ensures none of her students are left behind. With 95-100% pass rate in all her modules, Ms Huda was considered as the most desirable lecturer by the students while at Villa College.

Pursuing and completing a Master’s in Business administration with specialization in Hospital and Health Services Management from University of Bedfordshire was a dream come true for Ms Huda. Her passion to advance the health services in the Maldives and her desire to empower the nurses in Maldives led her to where she is today. Today, she is the Nursing Director at ADK Hospital. ADK Hospital is an innovator and pioneer in health care services in Maldives. It provides the highest quality of care safely and has state of the art infrastructure capable of providing the most advanced health care services in the Maldives. As she assumed her role as the Nursing Director, Ms Huda is working towards provision of highest quality safe care at ADK Hospital which the hospital is well known for. Ms Huda motivates and ensures her staff are well aware of the development in the field of nursing to keep up with the pace of this evolving and growing industry. Ms Huda focuses on the development of her staff and encourages her staff to work passionately on their self-development. Her open mindedness and creativity make her an inspirational leader. She is a responsible and dependable person with strategic and critical thinking skills. She is an effective influencer which is an essential quality for a leader. As a leader she focuses on the vision, mission and the organization's strategic plan to ensure the organization's goals are driven. 

Ms Huda has won the titles of “Asia’s outstanding Director Award in Nursing and Asia’s Dedication Award for Nursing” 2021. This is a prestige and an honor. I am deeply humbled and truly honored to receive the award. I believe this will be an inspiration to many nurses to come forward and apply to awards and present to the world the outstanding work they are doing in the field of nursing. Through this win, I would like to encourage nurses of Maldives to come forward and engage themselves in their self-development and professional growth as well. Nurses are so deeply engaged in their work that in many instances they neglect themselves in the way of their work. I want this to be an eye opener and an opportunity for all the nurses of Maldives to grow themselves and to work on their personal and professional growth and to present out the wonderful and hard work they are doing in ensuring everyone’s safety.
