Nilupa Ranaweera has bagged Asia's Outstanding Broadcast Engineering and Technology Award


Nilupa Ranaweera is a highly experienced engineering professional with more than 25 years of broadcasting experience in Sri Lanka. Of this experience, 18 years have been at higher managerial positions. He is currently working as the Group Director - Engineering at EAP Broadcasting Company Limited, which is one of the largest media organizations in Sri Lanka.  

Nilupa was also a pioneering engineering force behind other well-known media organizations in Sri Lanka, where he joined at early stages and set up the engineering practice, almost ground up. Closer examination of his achievements over the years shows that most of those were made in high stress environments that required a unique blend of technical and soft skills.  

He attributes his technical success to hands-on detailed oriented approach and his willingness to absorb the latest innovative technology related to his field. He has a sharp analytical mind to troubleshoot and diagnose a fault and is not afraid to get into the trenches with his team. When combined with high integrity, willingness to collaborate with all stakeholders, driven by excellent interpersonal communication and project management & financial management skills, make Nilupa a well-respected professional in the industry.  

His expertise & professional interests focus on Broadcast System Designing & System Administration, IP based  broadcast & Transmission solutions, Satellite & TVRO system design, ICT solution design including Storage &  Network security systems, Digital Broadband system design & integration, Mobile interactive system design &  outside Broadcast Solution Design & integration. In addition, he has in depth knowledge of terrestrial TV & radio transmission network designing and deployments using field coverage study.  

Participant from Sri Lanka among 22 participants from 12 countries around the world for the “Radio and Television Seminar for Senior Managers” organized & sponsored by State Administration of Radio, Film and Television (SARFT) of China in 2009. 

Member of the Sri Lankan Cultural team which performed in the “Art Performances of the 16th Asian Games 2010” in Guangzhou, China in 2010. (Participated as the Engineer of Lanka Dancing Company, Cultural wing of SLCJF).

Member of the Media delegation team to the People's Republic of China on the invitation of Foreign Affairs Ministry in China and organized by the Chinese embassy in Sri Lanka in 2003. (Visited to mass media institutions in Beijing, Shanghai, Chengdu and Tibet).  

Member of the Media delegation team to China on the invitation of All-China Youth Federation in 2008. (Visited to Olympic venues, China Radio International, Beijing Planning exhibition hall, Hydropower station,  Qingzang Railway company, Tibetian Medicine Museum, etc.. in Beijing and Xining).

PROJECTS INVOLVED

 

Planned, designed and implemented the first ever HD Ready, file based (tapeless), fully automated broadcast workflow and complete terrestrial transmission network (with 11 transmission Stations) for HiruTV in 2011.  


Designed and implemented the complete infrastructure facility and fully fledged file-based Media Asset Management (MAM) system for HiruTV.

 

Planned, designed and implemented tailor-made Outside Broadcast Vehicle for HiruTV with full HD & 4K ready work flow for HiruTV.

 

Engaged with massive “Media Box” project including huge 4 TV broadcasting Studios for Hiru TV, which equipped with latest state of the Art broadcast equipment.  

 

Provided technical designing perception for Cloud based Mobile solution to live viewer interaction including  voting Platform - biggest musical live reality show franchised with “Rising Star” and mobile application with  back end control system to enable viewers to answers real time for Child Quest show for Hiru TV.

 

Provided Technical knowhow for massive production of the country, Film award ceremony in years 2014, 2016 & 2018 and for special live coverage of local authority, provincial, general & Presidential election result telecast.  

 

Introduced the first robotic camera system with multi-axis control and IP-Based Mobile Portable Audio/ Video links using Data Bandwidth Bonding technology to the local broadcasting industry.  

 

Design, install & commissioned the Main Control Room and Studios including transmission network for  both MAX Radio & Max Television. 

 

WI-MAX modem testing for multi-path signal reception in Collaborated with Unwired - Sydney, Australia and ATM integration for the backhaul of Ripwave broadband wireless system in collaborated with Bharathi  Telecom in Bangalore, India behalf of Navini Networks.

 

Hardware/ Software & RF Verification tests of Navini Base-Station in Navini Labs in Texas, USA which supposed to install and commissioned in Bellsouth, USA. 

 

Complete Installation & Commissioning of transmission system, Control room Equipment including fully server based automated broadcasting system (First time in Sri Lanka) of ART Television Broadcasting Company. 

 

Satellite project to telecast the president’s speeches Live from Temple trees to selected island-wide locations  using ThaiCom Satellite in collaboration with IWS Holdings & Singtel in 2002. Developed a full-fledged character generator software using Visual Basic for Max Television.
