Persatuan Kebajikan Jayam Naamnadu has bagged Asia Award for Most Promising Service in NGO

First of all, I would like to take this opportunity to thank the ASIA AWARD, powered by RULA AWARDS, and the World Research Congress for honoring me with the prestigious award ASIA’S NO.1 BRAND & LEADERSHIP EXCELLENCE AWARDS. And I am very honored and humbled by this recognition and acknowledgement for being awarded with the “ASIA AWARD FOR MOST PROMISING SERVICE IN NGO” in “ASIA’S NGO/SOCIAL SERVICE AWARDS” category.

The secret to living is giving. That is to say, by contributing to the well-being of others, our communities and the world at large, we find more meaning in life. With an unwavering passion to improve his community and the quality of their lives, to inspire and encourage the helpless people to achieve greater heights, Dr. Kumarendran started his philanthropic fervor in 2015. What started as a humble deed to serve the people is now a registered (2018), official and legal entity established to continue serving the people in need.

Dr. Kumarendran was born in Penang, Malaysia to Mr Balakrishnan and Madam Nagavalli. Hailing from a modest proletarian family, he always knew the difficulties involved in sustaining the balance in a household. Having completed his Degree in Computer Engineering from Singapore Institute of Engineering Technologist, he realized education is the key to empowerment yet impossible to access unless we are willing to move outside our comfort zone and learn to see the world from more than one perspective. When we do this, Dr. Kumarendran believes we can truly improve the world.

Some of the many hats that Dr. Kumarendran adorns are, Managing Director for Farmasi Jay Sdn. Bhd, Business Advisor for Infoline Systems Sdn. Bhd and a Certified Financial Planner with Great Eastern Life Assurance (M) Bhd. He is also the President and Founder of Persatuan Kebajikan Jayam Naamnaadu Kuala Lumpur & Selangor, an Auditor at Kuil Sri Meenatchi Sockanathar Petaling Jaya, a member of the Rotary Club of Bukit Bintang and above all a Platform Speaker who deals with topics like motivation, education, self-awareness, financial planning, goal setting, business development and many more. Clearly Dr. Kumarendran is the epitome of multitasking. Wearing so many hats requires self-discipline, focus, dedication, and true passion.

Dr. Kumarendran has established himself in his professional career by being one of the “Million Dollar Round Table” recipients awarded by Great Eastern Life Assurance (M) Bhd but it is his resolute and unfaltering volunteer engagement that keeps him rooted and grounded.

He was conferred with the Doctor of Humanity Honorary Degree by the University of Jerusalem in 2018 for his outstanding philanthropic fervor.

Today, he is also the recipient for “Asia Award for Most Promising Service in NGO”“Love is something you do, not just something you say.” This philosophy has characterized his life, his accomplishments, and his exceptional contributions to the community. Dr. Kumarendran is worthy of this award.

From 2015, before the organization became registered, to present, having a registered charitable organization; Persatuan Kebajikan Jayam Naamnaadu Kuala Lumpur & Selangor, some of the outstanding charitable activities that Dr. Kumarendran did was in the field of education. He believes passionately in the transformative power of education, and he has devoted his life to working with schools and underprivileged students to provide better conditions for their academic accomplishments. The organization adopted 10 schools around Selangor and Kuala Lumpur, brought the schools under their wings and every year provided the schools with facilities so the schools can operate more efficiently, and the students can study more effectively. Dr. Kumarendran and the members of the organization have sponsored 300 underprivileged students with uniforms, books, bags, shoes, stationeries and paid their school fees to ensure children are receiving the kind of literacy instruction they deserve without any obstructions.

Dr. Kumarendran is a manifestation of his parent’s teachings. He upholds that ‘we can’t let those who are unable to make it themselves just fall through the cracks in our system. We need to help every kind of person.’ Part of his contributions include the provision of Ayurveda and contemporary medical treatments for the disabled people. Not only that, but the organization has also donated wheelchairs, diapers, medications, government help and even helped the disabled to get their disabled OKU card.

Recently, during 64th Malaysia Independence Day, Dr Kumarendran have sponsored 10 units of wheelchairs, 300 units of Vitamins, 50 packs of Adult Diapers and 1 month grocery items for 30 packs. This noble move was appreciated by Y.T.M. Dato’ Johan Pahlawan Lela Perkasa Setiawan, Dato' Muhammad bin Hj. Abdullah, Undang Luak Johol, and presented a certificate of appreciation.

All of his activities are in line with the vision he has to help the underprivileged by providing humanitarian assistance. Dr. Kumarendran has extended much medical assistance to patients; right from the paralyzed to the mentally challenged with paid medical treatments, sponsoring adult diapers, medicines, and special milk powders as per patients’ needs. Good intentions aren’t enough. Philanthropy, in its most effective form, must yield measurable results and it is evident in this organization’s quest.

Hailing from a multinational and multicultural nation like Malaysia, celebrations like Hari Raya, Christmas and Deepavali can’t be excluded from the agenda. Dr Kumarendran and his team of volunteers have taken productive initiatives to help the needy families who are living from hand to mouth basis by providing them with household necessities such as household essentials, new clothes, and cookies, to accentuate the experience of celebrating and bringing small sparks of joy to these families. In 2019, the organization helped sponsor 200 families, whereas in 2020 they sponsored increased to 350 families and for this year 2021, due to COVID – 19 Pandemic 2021 the number of families that received help in terms of grocery sponsor is increased to 500.  They are providing Deepavali aid for 500 underprivileged and needy families to enable them to experience the joys of the Deepavali festival. Dr Kumarendran has been doing this Deepavali charity for the past 3 years, and this year will be their 3rd year charity helping 500 needy families from B40 Category from 10 areas around Kuala Lumpur & Selangor.

After the pandemic hit in March 2020, the service and support that Dr. Kumarendran and his organization rendered to the community never stopped. While the lock down consumed many and devastated the economy and income of many families, the organization continually reached out to help the underprivileged and B40 families in batches. The number of families that the organization and Dr. Kumarendran reached out to during the Movement Control Order (MCO) from 2020 to 2021 is around 1500 families. During this period, with the loss of income for many, the organization assisted many students to pay their school fees and to pay for the internet connection for the students to study online.

The organization’s support never stopped and Dr. Kumarendran remained a stalwart supporter of the cause he took up many years ago and to maintain the vision of his organization to address the always-changing needs of the broader community.

Not all in Kuala Lumpur (KL) are fortunate to have a roof above their head and have at least one meal per day. There are some in KL who need as much as we can give and more. Dr. Kumarendran and members of his organization, sponsors, contributors, and volunteers, provided good food, some snacks and love, for the homeless people around KL.  They not only distribute food; they also take the time to talk to the homeless people so that they may learn more about them. Dr. Kumarendran’s rationale behind this is that by learning more about them, it helps us to understand how we can help more than by just giving out food. He is truly a humanity hero.

Apart from that, the organization has helped many people by creating business opportunities for those who lost their jobs. They aided and assisted these people to start a business whether it was to start catering business, to put up food stalls, open salons and barber shops and even send women for bridal courses so they can generate income for themselves. One remarkably astute Chinese proverb, "Give a man a fish and you'll feed him for a day. Teach a man how to fish, and you'll feed him for a lifetime." Dr Kumarendran always believes in this quote and has lightened up a bright future in many underprivileged families especially to single mothers and disable persons.

This aid did not only stop for the local people, but Dr. Kumarendran extended his help to the foreign workers as well. Many foreign workers lost their jobs and the organization sponsored food for them. The organization also helped some migrant workers with no proper documentation to return to their home countries. Each return was unique in its own way and highlighted the different and extreme conditions the migrants faced amidst the COVID-19 pandemic prior to their return. However, Dr. Kumarendran was undeterred by all these and persevered. Apart from that, he also has sponsored Bihar Siddharth Compassion Trust, to install a water pump at Bela Village Gaya, Bihar India. The village has had a water issue for many years, and they need to walk a long distance to get the water. But now with Dr Kumarendran's initiative their water problem was settled.

His generous spirit and unwavering dedication to his communal work are self-evident from the numerous success stories shared about his incredible impact on the recipient of his help, fellow volunteers, organization members and on the children he helped educate in our community. Dr. Kumarendran exemplifies selflessness, enthusiasm, courage, compassion, and perseverance; traits proven to be an essential key to his success as an effective leader in his service in NGO.

Dr Kumarendran expresses his gratitude and appreciation to those who always be the backbone for all his success. “I am extremely honored to receive this prestigious recognition and I would like to dedicate this award to my Parents, Family and all the members of PERSATUAN KEBAJIKAN JAYAM NAAMNADU KL & SELANGOR and my friends who have always supported me along the way.”
