My heartfelt gratitude to Asia awards powered by RULA Awards for honoring me with Asia’s Outstanding Women Performer award (2020/2021). I am very much overwhelmed with the recognition, a platform, an international exposure that I have received for my work. It has definitely boosted my enthusiasm to work even much better, passionately in upcoming days.
I was born in a middle class family, went to a government school and got my PCL certificate in Commerce. During my school days, I use to take part in volunteer jobs for many school activities organized by different NGO’s and INGO’s and I can’t remember exactly from when I devoted my interest in social work and community welfare.
Almost 10 years back, I got an opportunity to start my career in my interested field, as a Vice president of Unicorn Welfare Society Nepal, a non-profit organization that worked for human rights. After my marriage I quit the job and continued as a housewife.
After getting married when I moved to my husband home, I found the society, culture and the social environment completely different. There I have seen many domestic violences against women, women being hatred and dominated.
Domestic violence is a widespread problem in Nepal. Cultural, economic and religious factors reinforce male dominance. A woman is completely dependent on her husband for food, clothing and shelter for herself and her children. Also the Nepali legal system does not provide an effective remedy to women subjected to domestic violence.
As being myself a women, I could not remain silent or pretend if nothing happened at all. Then I make up my mind to work for those needy women and children in my locality. With a motto of women’s self-reliant and development for a prosperous Nepal, Balkumari Mahila Samaj was established in the month of July, 2017.
Balkumari Mahila Samaj, is a social organization that focuses on women’s empowerment and works for children’s welfare. Cervical Cancer Testing Camp under Women's Health was conducted in August, 2017 with an objective of preventing cancer if awareness is adopted in time.
“The world should need us more than we need the world”. Leadership development and speech art training was conducted for the young girls under non-formal education. Various trainings were organized particularly targeted for women and girls such as Employment Program such as Training of Knitting, making pearl and crystal ornaments with the objective of making women entrepreneurs and Computer training with an objective of making young women proficient in intellectual development and technical field.
The organization has provided aids to street children and homeless flood victims in Rautahat. The organization has also worked in partnership with International organizations such as; 1. Nepal Taiwan Association, Taiwan for distribution of stationary goods and clothes to Chepang
community children and 2. JICA (Japan international cooperation agency) with Nepal Police for One-day awareness program on road safety for local women.
I have accepted all the challenges and hardships on my way here. Each hurdle I attempted made me more stronger and built confidence in me. It was my beloved husband who always inspired me to do more. My parents and friends are my backbones, who were always there during my ups and down. My sincere gratitude to everyone for helping me to reach here where I can proudly hold up this award as a mark of my achievement. I would like to dedicate this award to all the members of Balkumari Mahila Samaj, without them it is not possible to win this award. I promise to dedicate myself to work better and make my life worth living. Thank you!
