Oscar Yong has bagged Asia's Best Music Education Award

My Bio:

Oscar Yong, Tenor. Hails from Sibu, Sarawak, Malaysia. A protégé of Italian International Tenor, Angelo Marenzi.

Studied music at Institute of music, UCSI University and Conservatorio di musica, Santa Cecilia, Roma, majored in vocal performance and minored in piano. Obtained Grade 8 Trinity Guildhall vocal certificate with distinction and passed Grade 8 ABRSM piano examination. He speaks Mandarin Chinese, English, Malay, Italian, and French.

Joined vocal masterclasses by Maurizio Colacicchi, Ren Rong, Low Siew Tuan, Aw Yeow Hoay, George Shirley, Nicola Martinucci and Lorraine Nawa Jones. Participated in several vocal workshops, Opera Plus 2014 (KL, Malaysia), Winter Journey 2015 (Hua Hin, Thailand) and Opera Viva 2017 ( Verona, Italy). Worked with notable pianists and repetiteurs, Michael Hampton (UK), Joyce Fieldsend (UK), Justina Lee (USA) and Gerardo Felisatti (Italy) as well as stage directors, Kittinant Chins (Thailand) , Benoit de Leersnyder (Belgium) and Robert DeSimone (USA).

He was one of the selected young artists of Young Artist Program in Rovereto, Italy under the guidance of Italian great conductor, Giuseppe Sebastian Raffa for preparing the role of Duke from Rigoletto under Operama production in 2019.

He sang in UCSI Chamber Choir which awarded the Gold prize in Orientale Concentus III International Choral Festival Competition in Taiwan. He was the tenor sectional leader of UCSI Senior Choir and Yin Qi Choir. He performed a lot of choral repertoires such as Bach's Cantatas, Bach's "Magnificant in D major", Handel's "Messiah", Haydn's "The Creation", Mozart's "Requiem" and so on. He was also one of the East Malaysia Bach Festival Singers.

He had lots of solo performances experiences, just to name a few, in 2011, he was selected as tenor soloist for Mozart's "Vesperae Solennes De Confessore K.339". In 2012, he was chosen as one of the Ten Young Christian Singers for performing "Sing Unto The Lord" tour concerts. in 2014, he sang with his friends "4 voix 4 mains" vocal recital and was invited as guest performer of "The Duos unforgettable" concert at DPAC. He completed his vocal graduation recital in 2015. In 2016 and 2017, he sang with "I Cantori Italiani" group in Italy. In 2018, he was invited as a guest performer of "Esther Ting voice solo recital" in Sibu. In 2017 till 2019, he was invited as one of the singers of Memorial Concert of Angelo Marenzi in Italy. In July 2019 was his public voice solo recital debut, "My Voice, My Story" in his hometown, Sibu and in October, "Sing For You" voice recital in Bintulu with his singer and musician friends with great success.

In March 2022, he was invited by Yin Qi Music for performing "Over Hill, Over Dale" in KL, 16 singers Chamber group which led and conducted by Malaysia young and talented pianist, composer and conductor, Caeleb Tee. In August 2022, he organised a solo voice recital titled "I'm waiting for you"in Sibu after MCO period. In August 2023, he was invited by The Grace Singers as a guest performer in his hometown too. Performed at various places, includes East Malaysia, West Malaysia, Taiwan, Thailand and Italy.

He has also performed some roles in recitals or concerts setting, like Raoul (The Phantom of the Opera), Tony (West Side Story), Saint Brioche (The Merry Widow), Gardefeu (La Vie de Parisien), Elvino (La Sonnambula), and Nemorino (L'elisir d'amore).

Awarded male group second runner-up in 2014 40th Malaysia National Classical Singing Competition. 

Besides that, he was actively promoting and organising different musical events for example online vocal masterclasses in 2021, Sibu Singing Festival which consists of a lecture recital and a vocal masterclass in June 2022 and music concerts and recitals like "Oscar Yong's Students & Friends Voice Recital" with great success and obtained great responses from the audiences in June as well. 

He also was a vocal coach for several churches and invited as a vocal judge for several singing competitions.

He has taught more than 100 students from young age of 7 till adults age of 60, from beginner level till proficiency level, from classical to contemporary style. His students also achieved excellent results in examinations and competitions. Within One year plus, he managed to guide and help 10 students won more than 30 awards in various local and international singing competitions.

More than 15 years of experiences in music performance and education industry, he still always keep upgrading himself by taking lessons and attending variety of music workshops, seminars, masterclasses, webinars and camps for maintaining him as a wholesome singer, musician and music educator.

Achieved Certificates of Recognition for outstanding dedication and contribution in music education, pedagogy and performance from USA International Youth Music Competitions (IYMC) in 2023 & 2024, Outstanding Teacher Award from 9th and 10th Sandakan International Music Festival (SIMF) and An Exemplary Teaching Award from Arcadia Music Competition 2024 under Global Competition Union.

He is the Founder and Music Director of Oscar Music Studio which based in Damansara Perdana, PJ currently and work as full-time music instructor, teaching vocal, piano and music theory.

Oscar Music Studio is also added to SchoolAndCollegeListings by Worldwide Education Directory in April 2024 and in June 2024 has achieved Asia Award with one of the highest score nominees, 992/1000 with the title of Asia Best Music Education Award too.

In coming November, he is going to have his debut public voice solo recital entitled "Grato (Italian) ? (Chinese)" which means grateful at Damansara Performing Arts Centre (DPAC) Theatre as a tribute concert to everyone who had assisted him in his past 16 years musical path together with his collaborative pianist, Dr Andre Ng.
